During my time at Discovery Inc., I participated in the 2019 Smart Home Challenge for HGTV's annual sweepstakes for their 2020 Smart Home. The challenge was to ideate product ideas or compile a list of already made products that could be included in the 2020 Smart Home. All Discovery interns were encouraged to participate in the challenge.
My first proposal included about 20 different product items. I wanted to centralize my proposal around sustainable solutions for the home so I researched products that could help the HGTV 2020 Smart Home family reduce their carbon footprint. On top of proposing these products, I also sketched out a product design for an edible garden inside the kitchen. I have attached images below. The idea was to create a cabinet that served as a small garden. The cabinet would be integrated into your kitchen with a clear glass so you can see your herbs growing. It would be lined with LED grow lights and have enough space for about 3-5 plants.
A few weeks after I submitted my first proposal, the team reached out to me and selected me as one of the finalists. They wanted me to create another proposal based around my suggestion for a smart garbage bin. I ended up winning the challenge! Not only did the garbage bin make the final list but a few of my other products were also included in the products that will be included in the HGTV 2020 Smart Home.
